Changing Processor Questions!!

Hi there,

I have an Acer Aspire 1410 netbook that has a 1.2 GHz intel celeron SU2300 processor, with socket number 478. I am looking to improve my processing power, and if I was to purchase say an Intel Pentium 4 2.8 GHz processor with the same socket number (478), would I be able to swap my current processor?! And moreover, would my Acer still function?!

If the answer is yes and yes, and anyone knows what kind of steps I would have to take after installing the new processor (ie. in the BIOS screen to setup the new hardware), I would be immensely indebted to you and your help!!

Thank you so much!

Cheers

[Ps. sorry if this is in the wrong forum topic mods, i'm a noob :S]

Changing a processor out in a laptop as compared to a PC takes a lot more work. Have you ever done something like this before?

Here is what you need to do first though: See if your motherboard is even designed to be able to run a P4. And if it can then see what BIOS is needed to run it.

Slacker7,

I haven't changed a processor per se, but I have SOME experience with this sort of stuff. However, I didn't know that it would be harder with a laptop, but I'll check out what you said to figure out w/ the motherboard.

And regards to the actual swapping: how much more work are we talking?? :P

Thanks!

Okay, I'm fairly confident the motherboard will support a P4, BUT is there a way I could get a 0.1 GHz increase in processing without changing all this??

It won't work, the P4 is a desktop processor, while they have the same pins they will not work the same. Not to mention it will produce way too much heat.
