Changing target location

Hey there you guys.
I've got a quick q' for ya.

Is there a way that I could change the default target location on my "My Music" folder to a folder thats on my external drive?
I'm almost positive that you can. However I don't want to use a program like tweak xp or the like.
I'm hoping I can do it solely with in windows.

Thanks

The issue is:
My sound card has a "media center" type program. However to play music I can only play it from my music folder. I'm hoping to 'fool' the program so that I can keep all my music files on my external hdd.

Make sense?

Thanks
Bob

Can't you just Share the files from the external HDD and make a new 'My Music' link in My Documents?

I'm not exactly sure I follow.

-Do you mean have two copies of all my music (one on external hdd and the other in my music folder)?
Or:
-Create a shortcut to the music folder on my external and throw it in my documents?

Well the 2nd idea didn't work for me and the first would take up quite alot of disk space lol.

Did I understand you correctly?

Thanks for the help

I'm assuming you're using XP. :)

Right click the My Documents folder, select Properties, select Move, and browse to the root of the external drive and select OK. That will move all your "My" folders and change the target location.

Well, unfortunately that method didn't work either.
I had all hope for it too lol.

I'm sure I'll stumble upon a method sooner or later.

In regedit go to the key folder: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Explorer\User Shell Folders

There you should have a bunch of keys with names of My Music, My Pictures, Favorites, etc. You can set them to where you want. Once that's done you have to reboot for it to take effect.

VROOM SKIES, why do I know your user name? You a big fan of F1?

Hmm, well I used to be heavily into rc cars. I was on a few of those forums back in the day: (unlimitedengineering.com, traxxas.com, maxxtraxx.com, maxxtraxxusa.com, rcrerevolution.com etc).

I'm also a member to other computer sites: (hardforum.com, 3dgpu.com etc).

Then there are numerous other sites that I'm a member to.
You've most likley seen me at one of those.

Cromewell: Thanks for that info, I'll give it a shot later on today.

Thanks
Bob

This method works for me, I keep all of 'My Documents' on a separate HD from my OS in case of failure and that way I only need to sync one drive from that computer over the network.

Right click the my documents folder and where it says location you change that and apply the settings. This is how I have always set up maps for home directories on the windows side, so I know for a fact this method works.

I'm sorry tlarkin, let me elaborate some.

The method worked in terms of the way you thought it would.
However the creative software didn't acknowledge the change for some reason. So therefore it didn't work in the way I needed it to.

Thanks

This is due to how some applications install resources in your my documents folder and they need access to it. Like for example, if you install lets say scanner software, by default it wants access to the my documents\my pictures directory because it will most likely by default try to save files there and perhaps put resources there. So, if that directory is not accessible in the C drive it freaks out.

This is just another way of how windows applications and developers are lazy. There is usually a work around for this by simply reinstalling the application and when it finds that the default path of my Docs is not in the C drive it will then install the needed resources else where.

I suggest you look at using a new media player that isn't so poorly coded and allows you to map things from any directory.

Most media player software give you the option to change the default location where files are stored/accessed. It's usually located under 'Options,' or 'Preferences' or 'Configuration.'
