Changing to a Different Firmware.

Right now, my router is a Linksys WRT54G V8, which isnt bad.

Ive had it for a little over 6 months now I think. Probably longer or closer to a year, but lately its been dropping the connection, and its a pain to get it back on. I have to pull the Cable from the routers modem port, and put that back into my computer so at least I have internet for a bit, restart my router, replug the modem into the router, reset the modem, then plug in from the router to my computer. And sometimes that doesnt work, and its gets very annoying having a dad yell at you to get the internet working. All he does is downlaod movies and music, nothing he needs to be yelling at haha.

Anyways, ive been looking at DD-WRT and Tomato and it looks like Tomato is going to work a lot better for my router. But what exactly am I going to expect from the cahnge? More stable connections, faster speeds perhaps?

I wish I could just do a linksys firmware update but version 8 doesnt have any to update to.

well dd-wrt is the one i use, but i think the version 8 routers cant be upgraded to a 3rd party firmware (read very carefully, if you screw it up it wil become unusable) but there are just many new features you can change, like the power output etc.

And will I see an increase of stabability and performance of my internet connection?

The overclocking abilities sound fun. Never modded a router before. haha.

well i cant really tell you that. i would have to say that there would be one, but even if there is not a gain in proformance, it is worth upgrading (just take it slow and follow all instructions, i have only bricked one out of 10 that i have done, so it is possable)

Sounds good. Ill try Tomato out first, as it seems like its going to work easier with my router.

Main thing I want is a reliable connection, cause within the last hour its already gone through two disconnections. First time I wasnt seeing the router, and 2nd time the router wasnt seeing the Comcast modem.

EDIT: Crap, nvm about Tomato, their site says it wont work with v5 or higher and I have v8.

That went very well. Only took a while cause I read each instruction at least ten times, but its all up and going and so far so great.

oh, cool, tell me if it does improve performance

Well so far, its been very stable with no crashes or downtime.

It seems like my downlaods have gone faster as theys tay above 1mb/s when before, it would start at 1/mb then drop down to 500-700kb/s.

And with torrents it stayed stable as well. The file was only 3gigs.

But im happy now. I really like the DD-WRT layout of the routers page way more than what Linksys had.

Good to hear, yes i also love the interface, all the extra features like the antena power output are great additions

This makes me want to mod my router. Will it work with the 160N's??? But then, i probably shouldn't...i have no problems what so ever right now.

yes, just read the instructions if you do and make sure your pluged into LAN

also i know with my 300n, i think i had to flash it, let it sit for a while and then if i recall had to hard reset it on the back, then it worked
