Charging Laptop batteries

Hey guys, I'm new to these forums. Just have a question about laptop batteries.
I just purchased a Compaq laptop, and don't know how long you have to charge battery for, is there a specific amount of time you need to charge it for? I forgot to ask the sales guys and can't find it in the manual.

Any help will be much appreciated.

They should turn off automatically when there done charging, with my old laptop the light is solid orange when charging, then it flashes when its done.
