Cheap Custom Build...

So here is the thing... My old computer died out on me in December, and now I want to gut it out and put some new hardware in. It was a Dell Dimension 4700 and wasn't the best of machines. I had had it approximately probably four years.

So now I have a fried computer and about $400 to build a new machine.
But atleast I have a monitor and such already.

Any suggestions on what I should do with it.

I have a friend pushing me to get a MacBook Pro, so should I just save and get that?
 
unless you NEED the programs that are avalible on a mac, get a pc. there are some ways to use those programs on your pc but thats against the rules to talk about on this forum,and its illegal. What are you going to be doing???

Well I am thinking about getting Age of Conan, so it has to be able to play it but not at high settings, just smoothly. Possibly some other games, but not exactly sure what.

Outside of that, just internet, writing and maybe getting a music program to work on songs.
 
get a pc...they should set u up with a good intel build. I suggest a 8600gts/gt or 9600gso/gt.....if u want amd ill try to get you a estimate....
 
I would look for a really good deal on a Dell, then upgrade certain parts. That is the best bang for the buck route.

But dell use different parts, different mobos etc.... so best to do your own build, a lot cheaper as well.
 
Correct. Dell motherboard, cases, and power supplies are BTX. Nowhere near the same as ATX cases and accessories. This is why you'll spend $200 to upgrade a power supply, and why you throw away Dells when their motherboards go bad.

However there ARE a handful of them that are ATX...
 
Are you suggesting then that I get a new case?

Also, my experiences with the Dell I have are that its really hard to find certain parts for it. For example, it was near impossible to find RAM for it. Probably proprietary stuff.
 
Exactly. Dell uses pro... whatever parts. RAM is probably the same as standard ones, but they probably renamed it or required "Dell certified" RAM.
 
I'm still leaning towards a Mac because I really haven't found a program that compares with my experiences with GarageBand.
 
Fruity Loops is a program i prefer over garage band by ALOT!!... but you have to be patient using Fruity Loops, because there is so much you can do with it..
