Cheap SLi or Good Card?

Hey guys, my build is coming up pretty soon and I just wanted to ask you guys a question.

Should I get nVidia's recent 7900 GT or put 2 cheaper cards in SLi? The card I'm thinking of are maybe 2 6800GS's. What do ya'll think? It might be a little more expensive, but I'm not sure what the performance would be like.

2 of these

OR

1 of these

Thanks for your comments!

Go with the 7900GT. The 7900GT will perform better then 2 6800GS just about any time it matters. Just to be clear what I mean is 2 6800GS tend to perform better until the settings get really high then the 7900GT start doing better. At the settings 2 6800GS does better the FPS is either so high it dont make a differene or they within 2fps of each other. when the 7900GT does better it could be the difference between playing it comfortably and not playing it comfortably.

Ok thanks dude.

I just want my computer to be "good"

I don't mean like excellent and getting 200 FPS on FEAR maxed. I just want a good computer that can run evey game on medium/high settings. This is because I want to get a computer every year (+ or - some) instead of getting an excellent computer every 2-3 years :D

agreed, a single better card will do better in the long run but make sure you get an SLI mobo that way you can add another 7900 in a year or two.... easy upgrade without having to throw old hardware out. in fact, single 7800gt will do you just fine but its definitely better to leave it upgradeable in my opinion.

The way I look at it is this: In nearly every situation, one good card that would cost the same as 2 cheaper ones in SLI is better. IMO one of the only reasons to go SLI is if you already have a good video card but need more performance for cheap. In a way you are even wasting money then...due to the fact that you would have to upgrade your video card sooner anyway.

Personally, I think the only "good" reason to go SLI is if money is not an issue. At least until SLI efficiency goes up, as of now a lot of SLI setups only increase performance by ~30% from the first card, not even close to twice the performance. Until efficiency goes up, in the long run SLI will only cost you more money vs always going single card upgrades.

IMO putting 2 7800gtx in sli vs 1 7900gtx would be stupid. The only reason would be if money wasn't an issue, and in that case I would just put 2 7900 gtx in SLI.

I must admit, Nvidia & ATI had a great idea in SLI. Way more money for them. :) Too bad that for consumers, the performance increase doesn't even come close to equalling the money spent increase.

If you want to prey on idiots, Earth is a good place.

No SLI is generally not worth it, not unless your the kind of hardcore gamer who games at really high resolutions (not talking 12x10 here). Something the majority of gamers won't even come close to, most of them can't afford a sweet monitor anyway after investing into SLI. :P

how about 2 7800gtx or 1 7900gtx?

How about one X19XTX instead of two 78GTX? Better performance at 50% of the price...

The GTX is way out of my budget range. Remember, this is only suppose to be a "good" computer:) not a super machine!:D

Anyways, I'm running FEAR on medium settings with my 6600GT perfectly fine! I don't have to have the best... just close to it! :D

I've decided that I'll just get one 7900GT when AM2 comes out... but by then they will have another GPU coming out ;)
