Cheap "VR" headset to watch movies from a laptop?

I'm starting to get excited for VR, but not for the obvious reasons. I've been reading that using a VR headset to watch movies 2D/3D is equivalent to being at the cinema with a really large screen, much bigger than the largest TV ordinary folks can afford.

Do really cheap VR headsets that accomplish the above task that can hook up to a laptop w/o needing a dedicated video card exist?

Doesn't require dedicated hardware (ie. vid cards), only an hdmi output to it. Too bad it's a tad more expensive than a decent monitor, and I really hate devices that rely on a lithium polymer battery to operate, rather than something like USB powered, as those don't last...

Most VR headsets use your phone as the display and strap onto your head. Google Cardboard is around $20 or so.

I really hate those el cheapo devices too. Part of the screen would be blocked by virtue of it being encased in cardboard...
