I just got this eMail from someone who must have seen my post here or at another board I post at:

Hello,
It has come to my attention that you might have an interest in
purchasing the operating system Windows XP PRO SP2,and/or the
application program Office SYSTEM 2003 pro.(Office includes
WORD,EXCEL,POWERPOINT,ACCESS,FRONTPAGE,OUTLOOK,PROJECT,VISIO 2003,
PUBLISHER,& ONE NOTE 2003).

I am selling Windows XP Professional, the complete version.
What I have is not the retail store bought version, but is the same
one that Microsoft gives out at IT Professional Conference Meetings
to any Engineer/Sales who comes to them in Europe & The Far East.
Because it does NOT have the "Activation" policy files attached to
the disk,it was not sold to the public, rather it is simply used to
promote business with System Builders (Engineer/Sales who invited
to showed up at the meetings-this is a regular practice of Microsoft
to promote business).

It is not a beta version, trial version,pre-release or anything like
that. And although this is a copied CD and not an official Microsoft
disk,it works exactly the same, and has many more benefits.Since it
has no activation files,it can be installed unlimited times on as
many computers as you like. There are NO restrictions what-so-ever.
However, there would be NO Web Based Support from MICROSOFT(because
it wasn't bought directly from them). That works the same with any
pre-installed program from Compaq or Dell, etc.

Also note, that Microsoft states on their web site-Registration for
windows xp pro is..."Completely Optional".It's all up to you! This
version can be updated at any time via windows update(just the same
as a retail version) and also contains internet explorer 6.0(and you
don't have to be registered).

This is Windows XP Professional SP2, the latest full version, and
as such, it can be used to upgrade from an existing operating system,
or it can also be used to perform a "clean" installation on a blank
hard drive.

I'd be willing to sell it to you for a very low price of $40.-
plus a small shipping & handling fee .If you include Office 2003 Pro
with it, I'll include free shipping for a total of $60.- us dollars.

You simply cannot beat this offer. This would cost you $299.-
plus tax in any store, or $600.- for both cds, and you can only
install the store bought version on one computer. Again, there are NO
limitations or restrictions with this version(other than the web
based support, but who uses that anyways.)

If you want to purchase Windows XP PRO ($40.-) or Office 2003
PRO ($40.-) or BOTH PROGRAMS ($60.-) ), email me with your shipping
address and inform me which item you want, and I'll send it to you
in advance. You will receive it in 4-8 business days (sent from
outside the United States) and check it out for free to see if it
is in perfect condition(readable or not) ,then email me back and
I will provide you with the information on payment.

I will email you the code-number to install the programs, after
I get your payment via an online-payment service such as paypal.com.
This is the best method to do business over the internet.

Thank you, I hope to hear from you soon.

Can anyone tell me if they have heard of anything like this before, or if it is a scam?

I have never heard of that, but I personally think it's a scam. I'm quite untrustworthy about things like that.

lol. Not too sure about this, (my plan) try E-mailing the guy back asking where exactly he heard this about you. Make and use a new E-mail to reply if you want to.

Even if that wasn't a scam and you'll get your cd's I don't think it'll be legal to use it.
You could download OS from some p2p as well and use it...

Sounds like hes trying to sell you CD's that he got for free via MSDN. I would not do it.

It is not a beta version, trial version,pre-release or anything like
that. And although this is a copied CD and not an official Microsoft
disk
,it works exactly the same, and has many more benefits.Since it
has no activation files,it can be installed unlimited times on as
many computers as you like.

I'm not stupid, I read that, but he also says that it's perfectly legal. And trust me, I know how to get less-than-legitimate copies of windows, but I need something that I can install on a new computer for a customer. If it was myself or one of my friends I would not have this problem.

Hmm....looks like a scam to get $40-$60. Seems to good to be true. I don't there would be anyone who would sell it for that price. Who was it that emailed you?

No one that I know... however the honesty with which it is presented still has me thinking that it may NOT be a scam... namely that he say that the CDs are legal, but copies, and also that he offers to send me the CDs first, and then send me activation codes upon payment.

Well - the Microsoft Events are true at times to get FREE software! Usually people that attend them have registered for those events and sometimes they do give out FREE software.

About a year ago I invited my sign guy to a MS TS2 event, at the end of the day we got a FREE copy of Windows 2003 Server Prem. -Office 2003, One-Note, Front Page - a USB hub and something else. Over big $$$$!

Which si completely unusual to see from MS. This past month they did a huge launch for Office 2007 and I have a keycode and a free download to install Office 2007. Here's the link to see I'm telling you the truth:
http://www.launchtour2007.com/download/
OF course you can get a free trial for 60's from here. But, you had to attend a launch event to get the real code - one that never expires.

So, perhaps this guy does have the software... but he does sound a bit fishy to me. Check him out first!
