what does the word chipset refer to? is it something on the motherboard, or a "set" of chips or what?

i have no clue, but i have heard it mentioned on here alot.

Microchips that support the CPU. The chipset usually contains several controllers that govern how information travels between the processor and other components. The big chips on your motherboard that acts sort of like a "crossing guard". It controls the flow of data throughout the motherboard.
I belive thats the definition, or at least, its what google gave me.

so basically it is all of the little metal things on the motherboard and the motherboard is more or less the peice of plastic?

No,the chipsets are the, about a little over a inch square, the north bridge,is in about the middle of the board and has a heat sink on it most of the time, the south bridge is in the lower part of the board. Some chip makers like ALI just have a north bridge chip

yes. the chipset is the north and southbridge. at least of the northbridge im 100% shure.. but on the southbridge im not 100% shure.. but pretty much :)

An example of a motherboard chipset would be the nForce4/3/2/etc... chipsets and the VIA chipsets. Also your sound card chipset would be like the Audigy2 chipset.
