could someone give a rundown of some recent chipsets? i'm looking for an AM2 m/board, and i'm not sure about which are the latest/better chipsets...

I've got a rough idea of the intel chipsets, but that doesnt help in choosing an AM2 board..

Im looking at the gigabyte GA-M61P-S3, which has the nVidia GeForce 6100 chipset on the northbridge... is that recent?

The latest chipsets are only on Intel's boards for now, with the 650/680 series from nVidia (I believe the 590 is still the highest for AM2), and the P35 which can support DDR3 has come out about a month ago.

As for the GA-M61P-S3, the 6100 is the video chipset, it's decent and it looks like it's a fairly well rounded chipset from what the specs on the motherboard are. But if you arent going to use the integrated video, I would look at a different motherboard.

The 570 and 590 are the top AM2 chipset right now, there the same but the 590 has more Sata slots and more PCIe lane so it can run both PCIe slots in SLI at X16 where the 570 runs SLI in X8. The nForce 4 is still a good chip, it runs SLI in X8 but the 570 has more Sata slots but the performance between the nForce 4 and the 570 is about the same. The GeForce 6100 is on boards with built in video.

ok that makes sense...

well considering that I'm not going to use the integrated graphics, i'm not going to use SLI, and i'm not going to be overclocking, can you make any recommendations?

i'm likely to use 4 Sata Ports, only need one PCIx16 slot, would like at least 3 PCI slots (4 is preferred), and i'm going to buy DDR2-800.
the Newegg power search comes up with a few brands i'm not too familiar with like BioStar, ABit, ASRock etc... are they good brands?

The BioStar TForce 550 SE seems to look like a good board for what i want.. do they have a good reputation?
