Hello everyone,
I'm a newbie who just joined, after hunting for a forum while computer shopping, so here is one more (no doubt one of many) question from another newbie looking for buying advice.
I'm looking at off-lease laptops, because of a) price & b) I keep hearing such negative comments about Vista & the off-lease ones come with XP pro.
I was wondering what those who know about laptops would choose:
A Dell Latitude D610, somewhere between 1.7 & 2 GHz depending on the model, or
An IBM Thinkpad T40, 1.5 GHz.
They're close enough in price, roughly $400, for this not to be an issue.
1.5 GHz sounds "slow" compared to current models. I understand that the GHz rating can't necessarily be compared, but IS there a significant difference between IBM's 1.5 & Dell's 1.7+ ?
I want it for writing, mainly (MS Word). I might install my film scanner & some basic photo software because they've got more memory than our desktop. I might want to watch the odd DVD. (Each has a combo DVD/CDRW drive). Not a gamer.
The IBM comes with an optional "USB floppy" & sounds quite loaded, lots of ports & things. I'm more familiar with Dell (our desktop).
I've been all over the internet for hours reading reviews on PCMag & elsewhere. I've found a few more negatives about the Dell, but generally both sound pretty good.
Just wondered what people here think.
Suggestions welcome & thanks to those who take time to reply!
