Choosing the right HDD

I'm building a new rig and one of the parts I haven't chosen yet is the HDD. Mostly because whichever I come close to chosing I've read a review that says its rubbish and will let me down.

So, I need your help now on chosing a good one. I need it to last me a while (5+ years?). I'll store mainly music, photos and games. Well, basically anything that can be stored on it.

I've got this one in mind so far:
Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 1 TB SATA 32 MB Cache Bulk/OEM Hard Drive ST31000528AS

Do you have any recommendations or is that about the best one I could get? I'll be getting two of them if it is a good one.

And just lastly, does it matter if things are OEM or not?

Thanks you for your time :)

You can get a bad hard drive from any manufacturer, its a mechanical device and go out the first day you get it or a week, month, year later. You take a chance, thats why you always backup your important data in more than one way.

OEM means it is JUST the drive no cables/adapters etc come with it.

Also I wouldn't suggest a primary 1TB HDD. Id only use them as a storage drive and leave unpowered when not in use.
If those die all your data goes too.

I use 2 500GB 16mb drives in my signature and they are twice as fast as the .10 drives 1 platter = less chance for screw ups and I never use more then 500GB at a time.

I leave the back up drive unplugged power wise until I need it to ensure it lives as long as it can and it ensures my data is safe. I back up my primary drive on it every 2 weeks unless something important comes in.

Also unless something changed their isn't that much difference between 16mb and 32mb drives in terms of speed. 8mb to 16mb is suppose to be "sorta" noticeable. If you want speed get a 500GB/1TB storage drive and a SSD primary.

I found a really good priced one, a Western Digital Caviar 320 GB SATA 3.5-Inch Hard Drive (7200rpm, 16 MB cache, 300 MB/s transfer rate). It's very reasonably priced so I'll probably get two of those and then just one 1Tb drive (or possibly just a 500Gb).

I looked at velociraptors just maybe but they way to expensive, the price of three 320Gbs. I'm not THAT serious into gaming.

So I should look for a harddrive and other hardware that isn't OEM then? So it comes with all the neccesary cables and goods?

Thanks for all the help from you guys :)
