Choppy audio after install

Hi, after doing a install of xp my audio becomes choppy only when loading programs and or having a lot of stuff opened. I am using the same audio driver as before and didn't have a problem until now. My friend said i might have copied the files over during the installation process and didn't format my hard drive completely and that could be making it open programs slower. I have a Dell Dimension 4800 Intel Pentium 4 2.8ghz with 2.25gb of RAM

P.S. My audio is up to date and it doesn't get choppy out of nowhere it only does it while running games and/or having to many things open. I recently defrag and virus scanned my computer so i dont think that has anything with it.

Thank you any share any thoughts you have.:confused:

sounds like that's the cpu under too much load to do the audio codecs. have you messed with any of that stuff, next time try to open the task manager (cntrl+alt+del) and go to the performance tab and if it's hitting 100 there's your culprite, you can go to the processes tab and see what's using so much power and tell us as it is going to be the culprite (don't say the system idle processes, the cpu can't not do anything so they are like a filler)

is this a wireless connection? is it direct with cat 5. i would find it hard to believe its choppy. seen a lot of things but that was not it. Start turning off some of the stuff in control panel, startup. Doubt you need much of it running except when clicking on and starting up manually and works fine.
