My girlfriend wants a new laptop her old one is old and broken, she doesn't have much money and likes the look of the chrome book.

She would use it mostly for doing college work and browsing the internet but would also like to install some games like league of legends.

(i'm aware that it isnt possible on the chrome book without installing a second linux based operating system)

Do you think this is a good buy ? if not could you suggest alternatives with comparable or better specs and lifetimes with a similar price

Thanks in advance.

What kind of 'work'?

I don't think LoL has an ARM build (unless you were considering the x86 Celeron version), so even if you applied a more open Linux version you wouldn't be able to launch it.

If she can do everything within Google Docs it might be a good fit, otherwise you might want to consider something else.

Chromebooks are great if you only do web-based tasks, like streaming video, Google Docs, web, etc. They have Chrome apps for things like basic image editing and quick games, but as you said you can't install actual applications.

Best way to figure this out if a chromebook would work is seem if she can spend a few weeks in just the chrome browser and only use web application. If she can and prefers it then it is a good buy.

I used one briefly and it wasn't a bad system. I could see owning one once I leave school. By then it would be for streaming and web surfing. In my experience it was kind of annoying using Google docs since I am used to word. It is certainly serviceable but if I was going to be doing a lot of typing is would rather just stick with Windows.

Google Docs isn't that bad, I have written a lot of college papers in google docs but for those who do not prefer google docs with a MS Office 365 subscription which for college students is on $79 for four years you can use office online which is not to bad.

My son has a Chromebook he uses for college. He really likes how light it is and how long the battery lasts.

You can edit Google docs, spreadsheets, etc... offline so you don't need an internet connection all the time for it to be useful.

Hi guys thanks for the feed back i showed her what you guys had said and she has decided that until she can afford a real desktop she is gonna get a chromebook. (and she has no way of spending a week using only chrome and its apps her old laptop wouldnt run chrome, haha)

Depends if the user cares about battery life. If so, a budget Windows laptop is likely not the best choice.

Asus T100 have 11hrs for single charge. Is that not long enough?
It is more expensive, but with inclusive of 500GB storage and student office, I still think that is a better choice.
