Hi, I am going to be going thru a divorce in the near future, and I need to know the BEST and most effective was/product to clean out any incriminating evidence of communication (email, IM's, ect) off my computer. Thanks in advance!

The most effective and easiest way it to just format your computer and reinstall Windows. But you also would need to delete the emails from your ISP, since they are usually stored on their servers.

If you have incriminating things then I don't think they should be erased becuase... well I think it would be wrong to until the divorce is over.

What he said.
You can delete emails from your ISP, by going to your ISPs homepage.
Then logging in, and going to webmail.
Or at least, that's the way I'm able to do it :]

Not quite sure what you're trying to get rid of but if it's REALLY bad and the police are looking for you, even deleted emails at the ISP end can be recovered, you gotta remeber it absically goes into a temp deleted server. They arent usually going to delete it, then reformat their servers to securely get rid of it.

Put it this way, if the police are involved they will eventually find what you think is deleted. Take a hammer to it is the only SECURE way

destroy your HD, that is the only way to get rid of any local evidence 100%

email is stored and backed up for a while so it would be easier to get a hold of. They would have to subpoena your ISP though to get a hold of it.

Why are you all talking about Police, he said he was getting a (Divorce). The E-mails and IMs are probably to the (Other One) hint!

yes we all got that, I am saying the only way to destroy evidence is to physically destroy the HD. Drill a hole thru the platter and then set it on fire.

Except for data that is stored on other servers like emails

Well if shes not to swift just delete the stuff, if shes smarter get rid of the drive and if her lawyer goes after your ISP then your really just (Screwed):D

Yeah, but ISPs will have a team of lawyers so if they don't feel like giving up any information they won't. The cost of the case would sky rocket if they took the ISP to court to get that information. Or if a judge ordered it, the ISP would have the right to contest it. At least I think, I'm not a lawyer, I just know a couple.
