Cleaning the Registry

Hi. I now have windows vista installed for quite long. I am not noticing anything wrong but I would like to know if it is needed to clean the registry. I install and uninstall many progs and just degfregmented my discs. I used ccleaner for the registry but is that enough? I just want to avoid slowdowns in the future that will maybe force me to format.

The registry cleaner seen in CCleaner is a farse to make the hard drive cleanup tool look more impressive. Besides the Windows cleanup tool available for use after a fresh installation of Windows a period run of an actual registry cleaner that works never hurts to see anything lingering when an uninstaller fails to remove all entries.

An easy to use and still freeware tool would be one like Eusing found at http://www.eusing.com/free_registry_cleaner/registry_cleaner.htm
 
Cleaning the registry doesn't have any noticeable effect on performance or speed.
 
I would disagree. I don't believe they're all important, but having used Eusing for a considerable amount of time, and having gone without for an even longer period of time, I'll give the opinion that in severe cases a registry cleanup can see performance increases, if just in the form of reduced stuttering and the like.
 
On various occasions you may be experiencing clashes with leftover registry values loading or still trying to load drivers some uninstaller left behind once the program was removed. A good cleaner can also correct cross linked entries causing problems as well.

That saves the need for an advanced edit of the system registry to track down problems at times. They are by no means a cure all for Windows but can clean up some problems by removing orphans and fixing invalid shortcut links.
 
There are a variety of tweaks including using the msconfig utility still found in Vista for unloading anything unnecessary when Windows startups as well as going with the Classic settings over the Aero style and side bar "eye candy" as it is referred to in order to free up a little more memory. But the occasional run of a good cleaner keeps other problems from coming up like two registry values trying to load two different things into the same memory address.
 
Disabling unused services in msconfig and services.msc will make your pc run faster and startup faster than cleaning registries! Another thing, registry fixers are not good!! Some times registry fixers make stuff worse and they sometimes delete needed registry keys.
