cleaning thermal rease of cpu?

I am replacing my brothers motherboard, and I had to take the CPU out, and in order to do that I had to take his water cooler attachment off of the CPU. Well now I'm at the step where I am ready to put his attachment back on, but there is still some left over thermal grease on both surfaces. Is it ok to just apply the new stuff, or do I have to clean off the old stuff? If so, how do I go about doing that? Thanks

would the Kleenex need to be damp? The grease is dry I don't think it will come off with just kleenex. Maybe some goo-gone? haha, I don't know.
