Cloned Harddisk doesnt operate the software

Hi,

The harddisk of a Dell 610(Windows XP) is running on another Dell 610 with the software we want when plugged in.
We cloned this hardisk and tried it in a Dell 610 again everthing seems OK except the program that we want, normally it is a password-controlled sw.

Considering all the registry also clonned to that hardisk , what can be the missing one and not copied to the clonned one?

When I cloned my root drive I did not have any issues which obviously is what you expected! Could it be that your protected software is clever enough to know it's now on a different drive (by some property of the hdd itself) and will not allow the key to work? That's quite an effective copy protection for expensive software; otherwise you could clone for say 100 PCs.

Edit: It would be very easy to do. On first install, the hdd serial number gets encrypted and put in the registry. Every time the software runs it compares that number with the current hdd serial number. Multiple installs from the original installation software can be prevented by other means.
