Cloning from Old HD to New Box

G'day All,

I've just purchased another box and would like to save time and bypass the installation of a bunch of programs etc. Would using "Paragon Drive Backup", "Acronis True Image " or another cloning/ghosting program be your choice as opposed to installing everythng from scratch? XP is already installed on the new macine and ready to go, Would I be asking for headaches and grief trying to ghost my old drive over to the new one? I don't want to get into a support nightmare and create more work by doing this. Even though I know my way around the yard pretty well I've never ghosted before. I do have an external HD that I could image to......I guess I just need some convincing for or against.

Cheers,
Max

Cloning is generally seen with any success when going from one machine to an identical system with the exact hardwares. On a new machine you are starting off fresh with a fresh system reigstry that will need fresh installs of each program.

If you try cloning from the old drive that would likely wipe the clean install of Windows as well as see an endless number of other problems. As for the external drives themselfves those are best used for what they are intended for namely backup and storage. If you game at all simply copying the automatic saves from each level over or saving for a reinstall never work since new ones still have to be created by the game itself.

(Yet I was surprized to see the auto and custom saves work when Vista was reinstalled here lately for an older game with those simply copied back into the new main folder.)
