College Network

This might be a stretch, but would any of you know how to open up ports on the network so I could be able to play HL2DM and CS:S? Thats as simple as I can put it. I know you can do it because plenty of people play WoW and other FPS through the network...but I have yet to figure it out. I'm going to ask a guy about how to do it but I can't find his room number nor does anyone else know his room number..so how bout it guys, any guesses?

Or what might work better, would be to know which ports Steam and HL2DM used, so I could forward those..Is there a way to find out that information?

If the Net Admin closed the ports for CS:S or HL2DM theres little you can do about it. The other games might use ports that are open.

too bad you can't configure what ports the game uses, then if you could find some that are open you could get around the closed ports.

you can configure what ports the game use, but it is more likely that your school uses a packet shaper to prevent you from playing those games, which is a lot harder to get around. but you can try just changing the ports the games use. make sure your firewall is configured correctly as well

The only way to change the blocked ports is to access the router or firewall, which I doubt you as a student can do (legally). It seems weird to me that a college would block ports for gaming, because i'm sure alot of students would want to game during their free time or when they're in the dorms.

I would try changing the ports in CSS and see if it works.

yeah but they don't block port 80....

you need a router and port forwarding enabled. Also, most likely they don't block the ports for gaming unless it has caused problems in the past or people were using the network for things they should not, like running a gaming server. Depends totally on the Admin though.

I'm gonna get with the tech dude of our football team and he will see what he can do. He did something for Xbox live..but I'm not sure what he can do with a Computer.

since the ports are most likely blocked(unless the IT dept is just plain stupid), get with someone who has found a workaround and get the settings from him. that is the only way to do this without trying to reinvent the wheel

thanks for making it look like i posted that, i never have. dont feel that way about everyone here. just feel banning someone could have been handled better...yet i guess even the mods are 16 yr olds!!! wouldnt be the first forum this happens at. at least i just got paid $50 to blow some steam
