College student needs help deciding

Hello all. I am about to be a sophomore working toward a degree in Virtual Technology and Design. My current laptop is no longer worthy of the heavy 3d rendering we will be doing next year, so i am in search of a laptop that will last me my remaining 3 years in college that meet these system requirements, preferably blowing them out of the water. To answer a few questions right out off the bat, i dont play wow or any of those heavy cpu games, although last year one of my classes was done completely in Second Life, so it needs to be able to easily handle that. We will mostly be using 3ds Max for our modeling as far as i am aware. I have sort of assumed that because i need a computer with good 3d capabilities, i would be looking at a gaming laptop, although that may be a bad assumption.

Here is a link to my VTD program's system recommendations.

Here is a link to Autodesk's recommendations for running 3ds max.

As a footnote, i have mostly been looking at Alienware's lineup, but they are meant specifically for gaming, and im not entirely sure that's what i need. Im open to any suggestions though. Spending limit is around $900.

Thanks all

Don't get the one suggested by DMGrier, that only with 14"

However, the main problem will be windows, most machine don't offer windows 7 professional.

Asus G60JX, 16", core i5 430m, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD, GTS 360m.

If you can spend little more, I do recommend
Asus N61JQ-X1, 16", core i7 720QM, 4GB RAM, 320GB HDD, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5730.

lenovo IdeaPad Y560 0646-2EU at similar spec with Asus N61JQ-X1, but personally prefer asus.

BTW, when you say next year, do you mean 2011? or you simply mean Sept 2010?
If you mean 2011, you don't need to look at laptop now.

Its for this upcoming school year. So i need to get it by mid august.

So i have noticed most suggestions are Asus. I havent really heard anything about them. Is it a pretty high quality build?

Im probably going to have to end up buying this laptop with leftover loan money, so i would prefer not to go above $900. Not the best way to get a laptop but what can you do. 0.0

Yeah ASUS is a great quality built laptop, They have been becoming a rather large company due to people recognizing them for there quality build and low prices for the hardware inside.

Asus, last time I checked, is the most reliable major brand oon the market, followed closely by Sony and Toshiba. All three make solid machines, though Toshiba tends to skimp on the casing a bit.
