Earlier today i tried hooking up my computer to a friends because she has a faster connection (i'm still on dial up ;) ) I plugged in the rj-45 ethernet cable and local area network popped up showing me i was connected. I then tried using both Firefox and I.E. but i get the "cannot connect to server" error.. Do i need to configure firefox to connect to the net through comcast or something?? If so how do i do this? Thanks!

Edit: A comcast forum member told me i should powercycle the cable modem.. thing is the modem had been off for a bit when i hooked up the other computer so i don't know if this is the problem yet since i have to wait until tomorrow to try again... Any other ideas?

contol panel-network and sharing center-local area connection status-click on 'internet protocol 4 than click properties-select 'obtain ip automatically'.

See if that helps...

How are you connected to the modem?

If you're going from the modem to a router to both computers, try this:
Unplug the modem and the router again. Wait 30 seconds, plug in the modem. Wait 30 more seconds, and then plug in the router.

If you do not have the set-up, and have both computers connected dirrectly to the modem, or through a hub or switch, then the problem is that the ISP only allows one IP address to be used through this connection, and you either need a router, or ask for them to add another IP. (Generally another $5 a month).

I checked the LAN properties and found that obtain ip address was already checked.. thanks though. :)

And both the comps weren't connected at the same time, i just pulled her 45 and plugged it into mine.

I'm gonna screw around with with my settings to see if i can't figure it out.. if any of you's can think of something else i'd be mighty grateful... last hope is to call comcast themselves.. ya scary thought.

There's a possibility that your friends's PC has some Comcast-proprietary software on it that yours would need... and you could only get it by specifically being a Comcast account holder. I have Verizon DSL now and I had to install some small software thingy. I also added a router and have another PC connected to that, but I did have to go and install the Verizon stuff first on the first PC.

Your best bet would be to have a router setup where you can plug into it to access the net and share the connection. You can disable or disconnect from it at any time and not affect your friend's PC.

Of course, I could be totally wrong, too.

I believe Comcast verifies that you are a subscriber by checking your MAC address. In order to use your computer with her modem you'd need to clone her MAC address (such as what routers do)

ok i figured it out.. somethin called 1394 ieee (i thought this had something to do with firewire)... It was disabled somehow:confused: Whatever though it's fixed. Thanks for all the help, dudes!:D
