Comcast woes

Feb. 27 our internet went flakey going off or on and slow. It was the same on both laptops using wireless. We could NOT get LAN to work either.

I left the country for 7 weeks and my family had off and on internet on the older IBM. The LAN only worked. No wifi.

I called Comcast and they said there was no signal so they came out. Man #1 said it was my modem and he took it and replaced with one of theirs. Same story, off and on and still no wifi. I called again. The second tech said the wireless router was no good and that the signal was fine. Internet off and on continues.

The family used the laptop out of the house with a LAN cable fine. Meanwhile I accessed LAN and wifi for 7 weeks outside the US fine with laptop #2.

Two more techs came and said NO problem. Oddly enough each time I got on with live chat as I was dealing with this OUTSIDE the US, they ALL said I had a signal issue.

I came back April 5 and no wifi, no LAN. I called again and a man from Comcast came and said he had to fix something outside. We had internet 4 days and then out. I called and the 6th man came and he said we needed two new laptops a and recommended Apples. I sent him out politely and got sr. tech support. He said he would investigate this.

Meanwhile I had the IBM rebuilt and the router checked. The computer specialist said the router was great and our IBM was fine BEFORE be rebuilt it and now is even better. I brought it home. I still have LAN internet on my Dell. Our IBM cannot get LAN connection AND the router has excellent signal as always BUT we cannot connect.

I am desperate and frustrated. The Sr. Tech Support man is nice but I feel 5 of the 6 who came out were incompetent and I am not sure what to do?

Wow...I don't really think any of them know what they are talking about.

Lets see the speed of what you have.

Click on the link and then select a tri-angle or star sorta near you. It will test your upload and download speed.
http://speedtest.net/

After the test is complete...click "copy forum link" and paste it in a reply to this thread.

After that we can start looking at Firmware for your equipment...maybe we can try to update that next.

That's a really good connection...It is twice as fast as mine and I have the best you can buy in Germany. That's not the issue, you are getting a good connection.

What kind of hardware do you have? You mention a "router" and a "modem" Might need to do a complete driver update for all hardware.

hardware

I have a RCA Comcast modem now. They took my Motorola. My router that works for my computer guy is a 3com.

So I have LAN internet on the Dell and a good connection. I cannot get the IBM to get LAN. I tried the wifi again since the computer guy says it's fine and cannot get it but I am sitting right next to the router. The dialogue box says excellent for the connection.

Sigh

Comcast just does that to make themselves look good, you don't get those speeds constantly, it's only for a very short period of time.

It's the DNS. My friend and I worked on it all night. The reason my teen's laptop could NOT get internet with the LAN is I needed to reset the modem when switching cable to and from a laptop.

The no wifi remains a problem. It is the DNS. 3 Com is not working now and I hestitate to call Comcast. Any ideas? We can ping MIT's IP but NOT MITEDU.

That's garbage:( How can they get away with that?

given the fact that my router works at my computer geeks place and I can get wireless other places, is this a COMCAST issue the DNS is not working? I am in contact with a high level computer person and Comcast and he cannot help. I am so frustrated.

Try setting all your computer to use opendns, thats what i used and it has not failed me for the 2+ years ive been using them. Instructions are on their site:

It depends on where you are and how their service is ramping up. The speed in my area was recently doubled from a max of 8Mb/s to 16Mb/s. This is the constant speed, not the "SpeedBoost" marketing junk. With "SpeedBoost" I may see as high as 24-30Mb/s for very short periods of time (5-10 seconds) before returning to normal speeds.

This sounds like something is not configured right on your router. I doubt that there is anything wrong with your Comcast connection, especially since you are able to get out to the web via the LAN connection. The modem reset when switching hardware is normal. Your modem authorises the MAC address of the hardware connected to it upon boot. You will have to reset it every time you change hardware.

Are you able to connect to the router over WiFi fine? It would seem so, but please confirm. Do you have any sort of ACL (Access Control List) setup on your WiFi connection on the router? Also, when you say connecting through LAN, is this through your router, or directly connected to the modem?

What doesn't make sense is that you are able to connect via LAN at your place, but not over WiFi. Then at your friend's place, you can use your router to connect via WiFi. Something is changing between locations. Is your router set up for DHCP?
