Command prompt wont stay open

Hi, I have no idea what could be causing me this problem. As soon as I open any sort of command prompt (either 'cmd' or the 'visual studio.net 2003 command prompt') it just closes itself suddenly literally a split second after it has opened! If this is of any use, I'm currently running Windows XP Pro with Service Pack 1 (never could install SP2, so I hope thats not the solution). Any help would be really appreciated as I desperately need to be able to compile within the command prompt before I can finish some coursework!

It may be that your are required to upgrade to SP2 if not try this

Open Notepad

Type the following

"Command.Com"

save the file as "Autoexec.bat"

Then tell us what happens
 
I just did that, and opening the file then caused exactly the same thing to happen. I doubt this could be to do with not having Service Pack 2, because on my previous setup I didn't have that either and never experienced this problem. This has just been happening ever since I reformatted my hard drive and installed Windows again.
