Commercial DVD Freezes Computer

I think this is a video card problem, which is wht I'm running it here. However, if anyone thinks I should be posting this somewhere else, please let me know.

Whenever I try to play a commercial DVD in my computer, my computer freezes. I notice that when I try to access the disk through “My Computer”, or even run “My Computer”, the computer freezes then too. I can’t even get out of ‘My Computer” through the Task Manager … I end up having to reboot. When I start the computer in Safe Mode, I don’t have that problem … I can access the commercial DVD easily. Recently, I ran into the same problem with an installation disk.

I am running XP Pro on an AMD Athlon 64-bit 3000+ processor. My video card is a Radeon X300 Series.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!!

Is this being seen on a prebuilt or custom build? And do you have a recovery disk or full install version of Windows onhand. You'll probably need it since this may be more of a Windows related problem then hardware. You may end up having to perform a repair install on Windows to see this resolved. First review the article for this seen at http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

The repair install method outlined there will repair the current installation of Windows without the need to reinstall any softwares/games you have on. It preserves the files and folders by simply repairing the essential system files. In fact the current installation of XP Home on the primary drive here is a little overdue for this when seeing similar problem using the task manager here.

does this happen with a particular disk or any dvd? Do you mean when you try to play it or simply insert it? Check cables, and try reinstalling video drivers and video codecs or the DVD software you use.
Also try swapping out the DVD drive for a different one and check hardware manager for problems.

It happens with most commercial DVD's. It happens as soon as open "My Computer" ... "My Computer" won't even open, and can't be shut down in any way, even by Task Manager. I have 2 DVD drives & its the same on both. Because ir happensbefore I even try to play the DVD, 've suspected it's a Windows or Video Card problem. Again, everything seemsto be fine when I'm in safe mode.

Thanks!

If you have a Windows installation disk onhand try running the system file checker. Type "sfc /scannow" at the Run prompt off of the Start menu and press the enter or click the ok button to start that with the XP cd in the drive. What that does is first verify the main system files and repairs or replaces any found damaged or missing. This would be one step before the repair install method at the link posted earlier.
