Comp for my grandparents

Hey,

My grandparents are in the market for a new computer. Their needs are very basic, like email, ebay, etc. I've assembled this computer:

Total cost= $274.77 including shipping, minus $10 MIR= $264.77


They have a monitor, keyboard, and mouse. I think that's everything....comments/ suggestions? I chose most of these based on mfg, and if a reputable mfg was out of the price range, I based decision on ratings. Also, based on this price, do you think I should build them one, or do you think it will be cheaper just to buy them something like a Dell or HP.

I would recommend getting an Athlon 64 instead of a P4, but it really doesn't matter much for their needs.
 
I would stick with the P4.

I figure your grandparents wont be playing games so they will just want it for basic,Internet,Email and stuff right?

So realy theres no need to get a A64.

Although they are both $88 so realy its up to you.
 
The AMD is also better than the P4, so they will be able to use the computer for longer....especially if you go with AM2.

Not to sound negative, but I really don't think they'll live much longer to notice the difference.

However, they do live in Florida for 8-9 months....so based on the climate (higher humidity/ temps) would it be smarter to get an A64 over a P4?

Yes, yes it would. The amd would run cooler than the p4.
 
I just saw that the S939 mobo that I chose has a 24-pin power connector, and the PSU is 20-pin. Do I need to choose another PSU or mobo? Or are there adapters, or will it work anyway?

You can get the adaptor (or just use it without the extra 4 pins), but i'd get a different PSU. Frankly, even at $25 it's not all that great.
 
you think about adding an os to it...that'l run you another 80bucks min for windows. and id stick with the dvd-rw you can get really good brand for like 30 bucks. but hey. no offense...but seeing how you went for it...if there gonna die that soon then maybe you should think about using some good stuff cuz ur prob gonna get it back in ur will...lol. na im just kidding. rom is fine. i doubt there gonna be burning dvd's anywho. just playing with you man. but ya make sure you get an os of some sort or that comp wont do em much good. you could be running linux or something for all i know, just making sure you know u need an os
 
I wouldn't worry about the CPU or the PSU so much as the hard drive. Lets face it, they're gonna need something that holds a ton of child pornography.
