Comp Life

Yeah...i heard somewhere...a long time ago...that if you keep your computer running..all the time...without turning it off, that it lives longer. Well..at least a few of the components. Then i forgot about it. Then 2 seconds ago, it came back to me, and i became quite curious.

Is it better to leave the comp on or off...or does it even make a difference?

I have heard that each time you turn your computer on, the jolt fries out an extra two days of your computer's life. There are people (on this forum) who leave their's on for sometimes months.

Well, it would only make since if you use your system alot, it wouldnt make since to leave it on all the time if you only use it a few hours a day. And the parts would be extremely outdated before they died, so i dont think you need to worry about the life of the parts.

i have my computer always turned on, well of course i have to restart it when installing some programs, but it always stays on

I dont with mine, since im running my comp with a 20pin plug on a 24pin board, so i only have it on when i need to. But once i get my new psu (today), i may leave it on all the time.

from what it seems, it sounds like its better to have it on. however, the electricit bill is something you have to be ready for if you plan on doing it for a period of time.

however, if you do, its good to have the monitor off when your not using it or having it do something that does not require your assistance. it'll be much better that way in saving you some extra change.

I heard that rumour too :P no seriously I agree, why keep turning the computer on and off if your a heavy user. I guess the price if the electricity bill would be the only disadvantage, specially if your living under someone elses roof ;)

Does this matter? I have a 20pin ATX connected to 24pin ATX.....why would that make a difference?

im sure the cost of saving electricity outwieghs the cost . unless the equipment was flawed how long do you think it would take a component to die.... i think its some bull that someone made to sound clever

I've had PC's that i turn off/on 1-2 times a day, and they lasted 5-6 yrs. (well i got rid of them, so really they are still probably working)

Then I have computers now that run continously, 24/7 as often as possible. they're a few years old (P4 servers) and no problems yet.

I think it's all a bunch of bologna. turning them on/off might wear down your power button, but i think that's all the damage it can do.
