I have an old Dell Comp that I want to just use to store backups of files. It has only 128 megabytes of ram and a very slow processor, but I just needed file space so I bought a new maxtor 200 gig HDD and took out the old HDD and put the new one in its place but I can't get the comp to detect it. I went into the bios and it still won't detect it. I tried the HDD on a newer comp and it worked but for this older one it doesn't. Mabey I don't have the master or slave set right could you guys help me out?

Depending on how old the box is, the BIOS, the chipset, the IDE controller, and the OS may be outdated and not recognize anything larger than 8.4GB, or 32GB, or 137GB. If you've set up the jumpers properly, any or all of the above may be your problem.

Hmmm... Well I have put a 200 gigabyte HDD in another comp that I think was just about as old, but might not have been. As for jumpers I don't know much about that what do you mean?

jumpers are just to set the master \ slave thing up. they're like little plastic tabs at the end of your hdd that you can move around. you should be able to find a table for which pins are master\slave\cable select etc. if you replaced your old hdd, then most likely the master pin should work.
