Compaq Armada 7400... help me reformat

I recently bought one of these for 40 dollars of a guy. It is password locked and he doesnt know how to take it off in order to get onto the computer. I have no idea how to reformat or reboot or anything of that. Can someone help me through the steps of erasing everything and possibly installing xp or whatever os is safe to use on it? Thanks
 
did you try right-clicking the drive in My Computer, and click Format?..

dont know if that will work, because you are in Windows, it might...

you may have 2 download a program or something.
 
I cant sign on the username. You need a password. maybe i can put a boot disc in and just reboot the whole laptop and erase everything. somehow
 
oops, forgot, do you got a XP CD? or does he have the CD he installed XP with? you can put the CD in, and re-install XP.
 
Yes, He has it installed but he didnt include the cd. Do I have to buy it or can I go with those boot cds they sell on ebay for a couple of dollars? They said its legit and ebay has tested it.
 
get the CD from the guy, is he a friend? im really not familiar with this, but if you want 2 re-install Windows, you need a full version of XP.
