Compaq Computers?

I am moving out of my parents house and am taking my HP desktop computer with me. My parents are going be buying a new computer system in a week or so with me leaving. I work at Best Buy and we don't get any discounts on computer systems. This week in our ad we have a Compaq Computer package that is $349.97. The package includes the PC, 17" CRT monitor and basic printer.

Specs on the PC are as followed..
AMD Sempron™ processor 3200+
512MB Memory
120GB Hard Drive
DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive

Now all they're going to be using it for is basic internet activities such as browsing the web and sending emails and such. It seems like a great deal for what they're going to be using it for.

My question is what is your guys' thoughts on Compaq computers and the deal itself? I've always had an HP and never had any problems. I'm not too fond of Compaq and I need you guys' feedback.

THANKS!

Your own opinion on Compaq is no different then others will give you here for the most part. HP has always had a good standard on their complete systems. Hopefully when they bought out Compaq they made some improvements?! But to even build a budget system you would see the price would climb over that amount to include a monitor and printer. A Compaq printer? An HP deskjet would be far better there. I run the HP 3500 series here where an ink cartridge lasts a long time!

Too bad you couldn't grab an HP model at good price like the one seen there to buy them a better complete build. The HP desktop printer included is certainly an incentive along with a monitor included. A 17" is a good viewable screen size for crt so that should work out for a basic setup. I doubt yhou would find them doing any serious gaming where higher end hardwares are needed.

He didn't say anything about gaming.:D Looks like a great deal to me. The monitor alone will cost you around $100-$150. That machine will do great for basic everyday use.

compaqs are terrible computers, the customer support is terrible too, all they give are temporary fixes to problems. The computers themselves are very low quality. I bought my computer before i know there was much difference between every computer :( . But generally speaking, dont buy compaqs.

I know there was no gaming being planned with that build! Apparently you missed something there. And most of us can agree on how "low end" Compaqs are. They are just about but not as low as eMachines for crud level.

i've had two compaq desktops and a compaq laptop they're decent. they're slow because of the crap i put on them and their crappy processors, but without any extra programs and for internet they're fine.

I noticed from your sig that you have an AMD Atholon XP3200+ OCed to 2.18ghz? I find that a little odd since the default speed on the model is 2.205ghz. Are you running the 333mhz or 400mhz model there? When OCed a little only being due to having a lock multiplier the 2.3ghz mark was reached with the post showing a 3400 not 3200 model. Back down the memory timings to 333mhz from 400mhz to see an Atholon XP2500+ being shown at post. You probably were one of the "fortunate few" to see good results with more then one Compaq. This is why the thought of HP making some improvements on them would be good.
