the computer is a few year old compaq presario 6000. all the calbes are in correctly. when turned on it just does a fast rapid beep and sends no signal to the monitor and does nothing but beep

also when i take out one ram stick it doesn't beep but doesn't do anything other then kinda go on and off like those adjustable lights when you move the switch up and down at a normal speed but expect that would be connected to the fans, power supply.

so most likely either the motherboard is shot right?

so should i
A) continue figuring out what the problem is
B) show it to the barell of a potato gun.

It's a lot easier to troubleshoot things like this if you have extra parts/whole computer assemblies to test it with. I have a suspicion it's your motherboard or powersupply, but it's hard to know for sure unless you can swap the components out. I'd definitely want to try hooking that mobo up to another power supply before I proclaimed it dead. I'd also try swapping out video cards to rule that out (unless it's integrated, which being a compaq, it probably is).

I'd also take any unnecessary peripherals and cards off of the computer to simplify things as much as possible. This includes modems, network cards, soundcards, etc.
