i have looked at the compaq site and all , and I still cannot find the driver needed to have cable internet.

when i go to control panel and to the internet connections there are no set of computers, which is the cable internet.

this is for my grandpa ,

all he does is surf the net and this computer is good for that hwoever when i reformatted it , I didnt back up the drivers

This was a computer that a grocery store used and they gave it to me when they got a new one

I would really appreciate if you guys could help me find the driver I need so my grandpa can use his internet that he is paying for

For such an old system, you'll probably about have to research each component and find individual drivers. I don't think there's any site or page on Compaq with a list of components/drivers.

k

k so i just need to throw the computer away

?

i had it working once, but we had to reformat it again and now i cantg find whatever it is that i found before

should you always update drivers?

i have a toshiba laptop and i have never updated the drivers , ive had my copmuter a yeare , i downloaded a trailer to scan my computer that shows i have 14 drivers out of date

When you go to the control panel, click on system, then hardware, then device manager. Look and see if there are any exclamation points or question marks listed.

Look under network adapters (if it is listed) and see if it has the words, use this device, or something about there being a problem.

If network adapters is not listed then go back to the control panel and click on add hardware. Let it do a search for the network card, if it finds it let it install the drivers. You might need your OS cd to install the driver.

One other thing, Are you sure you have a network card installed in the computer.

You might install a new card, they are very cheap, and install the drivers for the new card.

k

well no there is no network card

however when we had it working last time the internet was hooked up by the usb port and there was still the computers there in the connections, after i installed whatever it was I installed

that google search didnt turn anything up ive not already found

Sounds like you need USB drivers then, not network drivers. Do any of your other USB devices work?

Also, are you using Win98 or Xp?

Describe what you use to connect to the internet. Cable modem? DSL? Phone?

Are you using a USB ethernet adapter? How does the signal get from outside to your computer to connect to the internet?

Sure would make life easier if you just bought that $6.00 ethernet adapter ;)

Aside form that, you're going to need the USB drivers for that specific motorola modem before you'll be able to get online through USB with it.

What's the model? It should say on the front of the modem on the very bottom, or on the sticker in the rear (e.g: SB5101)

ok its not the drivers from the modem

I HAD THIS COMPUTER WORKING ONCE BEFORE , using usb ,

I dont have a hard time hooking up usb cables

Not really, if he is having problems with hooking up a USB port, then imagine the problems with hooking up a NIC card.

Ethernet card gets installed, driver CD gets run.. reboot, BAM! there's the ethernet card. Plug in the cat5 cable and he's online.

Simple.

Not like USB where you need drivers for the computer and the modem, then you have to hope they see each other.. if they don't, you need to make them find each other with a series of reboots of the modem.

Trust me, I have 4 computers on a home network, I've been through the USB issue with my Moto SB5120 on my main PC, it's so much easier to use ethernet.

im going to get that 7 dollar card

Feel free to PM me here if you need any help installing it, I'll walk you through it step by step, should the instructions in the box not be clear enough :)
