Compaq Presario R3000 Cutting out

Don't know what's causing it to cut out but it seems be inconsistent. If it hasn't been booted for several hours it will boot up fine and run for hours on one session but, if you run it for say 1/2 hour, close it down and re-boot immediately it will run for a random, but probably less than half an hour time period. If you try again straight away you're lucky if it gets past the sign on page. Every time it randomly shuts down there's a click from the top left hand corner somewhere. Anyone got any ideas?

The charger socket is in the other corner and I guess you're asking because of the problems they caused. Fear not - I have replaced mine recently and altho the battery won't charge (it's 'broken', I think!) the machine seems to run off the mains OK.

I think the modem card and the hard disc are on the side from which the 'click' comes but I don't know if they are the cause of the problem. Could also be the mobo shorting out somehow, perhaps? I have little experience of these things so was asking just in case anyone has any ideas or has experienced similar fault and cured 'em!!

Thanks for the response, anyway.

If the hard drive is where its clicking from then its not a good sign. Means the hard drive is on its way out and needs to be replaced. You may need someone to help you determine whats clicking and go from there.

There's not much else in that area that could click so I think you might be right. However it's an old machine which hasn't been used for prob a couple of years. We could buy a new HDD for it but even at approx £40 I'm not sure it's worth doing especially if we're not sure that's the problem. I think we'll just take the stuff off the HDD that we want to keep and scrap/sell the rest. Thanks for the response anyway.
