comparing radeon gfx cards which is better

I'm new to the forum and i'm looking for a little advice on component selection for my new computer.

At present I'm thinking of buying the following:


Computer Case Corsair Obsidian Series 700D

CPU Intel Core i7 990x EXTREME GULFTOWN (6 x 3.46 GHz) 12 MB

CPU Heatsink Corsair Hydro Series H70

Memory Corsair 12GB (6x2GB) XMS3 1600MHz (DDR3)

Graphics Card ATI Radeon HD 5970 BLACK LE - 4 GB - 6xDP (XFX) - Limited Edition (PCI-E)

Motherboard Asus Sabertooth TUF (Intel X58)

Sound Card Asus Xonar D2 Ultra Fidelity 7.1 (PCI)

Power Supply 1200W Corsair Pro Gold AX1200, Modular, 80 PLUS Gold, EPS 12V, 120mm Fan

Hard Drive #1 OCZ Vertex SATA-II 120 GB Solid State HDD - Silent

Hard Drive #2 1 TB (1000 GB) SATA-III Western Digital (WD1002FAEX) - 64 MB - Caviar Black

Now, i will have a lot of questions re this build as i look into it more. However at present i'm not sure about the gfx card choice. The card is quite expensive and I'm not sure if it is better than the AMD Radeon HD 6990. the 5980 LE is about £300 dearer than the 6990 and I'm just wondering what I get for the extra investment.

I am a bit of a noob, and any advice you can give will be gratefully appreciated

Do you really want to spend the money on i7 990x??

RAM - 3 x 4GB

Looking at your set-up, you would probably crossfire in future?? Probably be best to get 6990, since you don't mind spending load of cash.
