Compatable computer parts

I need help building my own computer, I have a general idea of what I need but I want to know if the parts are compatible. I plan this to be a gaming computer. I want to play some FPS Games so I want good graphics. I know this won't be cheap but I want to keep each part around the $100 range. If any parts aren't compatible if you could suggest a part that is compatible or cheaper with the same quality or better that'd be great.

CPU: Intel i5 I5-4430 3 GHz Quad Core
Motherboard: asus Z87-k intel haswell DDR3 ATX HDMI motherboard LGA 1150
Graphics Card: XFX Radeon R9 270X Graphics card - 2 GB - GDDR5 SDRAM

Put more money towards what you need like the graphics card and the CPU, oppose to spending about $150 on an expensive keyboard and mouse. You don't need a Razer keyboard and mouse to play video games.

I'm spending around 100 for card and around 175 for CPU, I already had the keyboard and mouse from my laptop.

I want to try and keep it around $1000, those two things are all I have. I'm just looking to see if all of those things are compatible because I don't know every detail about what needs to be the same.
 
Mobo - get z97
Ram - 2 x 4gb. How much is that ddr3 2800?
Case - personally get other brand.
Sound card - do u really need that?
 
Is thE Z87 board not compatible or is the Z97 just better? Ram is around $100, does 2x2gb mean I need two of the same 2gb ram?

Z97 is newer and better.

Case- Get something else like a 300r from corsair or something from NZXT

HDD- You can stick with that drive, but as it is your main drive getting a WD Black would be reccommended for the faster read/ write speeds.

Sound Card: You don't need it

Fan: if you go with a better case you wont need it

Headset: Do you really need this? Like i said before focus on what you need oppose to accessories.

Surge Protector: You don't have one somewhere in your house?
 
As a part of a family of 5 the surge protector is a bit occupied by a Tv, game consoles, and DVD players. I could change up the case (this is the thing I spent the least amount of time on) as I said I want this to be a gaming headset, I also said I know this won't be cheap, I don't plan on instantly buying all of these items because I don't have that kind of money on hand, I am going to be doing jobs and saving money. I will be looking at that drive and RAM however. Everyone is saying I don't need a sound card, what is it used for? Thanks for all your help so far!

That's a great case and a sound card will usually give you better sound quality then your motherboard however it typically isn't a big difference which is why we're not suggesting you get it.

And if you plan on saving enough money to get everything then be my guest and get that headset and whatever else you want.
