In order to know if your processor is compatible with your motherboard you must first look at what socket the processor is. The socket is the type of plugin it uses to connect to the motherboard.

Different sockets have different arrangements of pins that connect to the motherboard.

Say you have a socket 775 processor, for example one of many Core 2 Duos. You would then try to find a socket 775 motherboard. Generally speaking, most if not all 775 processors are compatible with 775 motherboards.

If you are looking for an AM2 processor than you would need an AM2 motherboard.

AM2 is not compatible with 775 and vice versa. Even 774 is not compatible with 775.

Currently 775 is the most common socket for Intel processors, while AM2 is the most common socket for AMD processors. Though AMD and Intel both have other sockets that they make chips for, those are the most common.

Hope that helps:)
