hi,

i have an hp 820n. i want to upgrade my video cards but i have no agp slots. i know that first generation pci slots are not compatible with pci-express card but, i want to know if my computer will accept pci-express card.

when i go in the control panel - system - device manager, and when i check in systm devices, i see that it's written "intel(r) 82801FB/FBM pci express root port - 2660". does that mean that it is compatible with pci-express video cards? here are other specs for my computer...

CPU 3.2-GHz Pentium 4 540
System memory 512MB of DDR400 SDRAM
Hard drive (GB) 200GB hard drive
Graphics Intel 915GV

Thatv dpes not have pci-express x16 slot. Only PCI x4 i think and all PCI slots. 915GV chipset from HP has pci-express disabled

Yes your board is PCIe based, it seems to have 3 legacy PCI slots and should have a PCIe 16x slot but the specs page from HP doesn't say so you should open it and look before you buy anything. The PCIe 16x will be inset from the other 3 PCI slots and will probably be black. A compaq system with the same motherboard (PTGD1-LA) has a 16x slot so I would think yours does too.

if it should look different than a pci slot, then i don't have it. i have 3 pci slots and all looks the same.

Then you are stuck with onboard or PCI graphics. A possible PCI card you could use is an FX5700LE, it should offer better performance than the Intel 900 your board has.
