Completely clean/format harddrive

Hey guys, i have a bunch of viruses on my harddrive, so I want to format, but I know that formatting might not get rid of all of my viruses, so can someone please suggest some programs that will completely clean my harddrive like its brand new; specifically something free if possible.

formatting will get rid of all you virus, unless it a ram virus or a bios virus, which i seriously seriously doubt. Just boot from your xp cd, or any bootable cd and it will ask if you want to format the hdd before reinstalling - say yes.

Incidently are you sure you need to reformat, reformatting is a last resort. Have you tried virus scanners? And what is making you think that you have virus anyway?
 
well i already reformatted it and hooked up internet after i installed a virus scaanner, and i could tell i had viruses because it showed a bunch of random programs in my taskmgr.. but the main problem is that after a few shutdown and restarts i couldnt even get taskmgr by pressing ctrl+alt+del and i couldnt open msconfig.exe. i;m quite sure that its a virus..
so i formatted again, and now i;m scared to hook up the internet ahah
what should i do to make sure it doesnt happen again?
