Component (hard drive) making loud noise

Hi,

recently i installed Windows 7 on my computer, after using XP Professional for about a year, and up until now every piece of hardware has been working without a problem. But now, sometimes when the system boots, one component is making very loud noise and i'm quite sure it is the hard drive, because it sounds like someone would overclock it from 7200rpm to 50 000rpm. Then i restart the computer and the noise disappears and both drives work great (they are also working during the noise).

Does this mean that OS has something to do with it, or is there a problem with the drive itself?

HDD: 2X Samsung HD322HJ
OS: Windows 7 64-bit

Thanks for help

No it couldn't be, because it was empty, but you've pointed out exactly the same noise, just somewhat louder, as if you would burn a CD or a DVD

First i thought someone was cutting down a tree outside.

Are you sure it's the HDD? It could be your CPU or GPU fan. I know for a fact that my faulty 4850 makes the fan go to 100% when i boot sometimes.

What are your system specs? If you have an OEM machine give us the mdoel number.

Ok,

my system specs are:

OS: Windows 7 (64-bit)
Graphics: ATI Radeon HD 4850
HDD: 2x Samsung HD322HJ ATA
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core
RAM: TakeMS DDR2 2GB 800Mhz
case: Revoltec Zirconium

But if you said your 4850 graphics card also speeds up it's fan, that might be the problem. Although i can't be 100% sure which component it is and i also don't want to open my case to look inside like STARS suggested, because it only makes the noise when i boot it from sleep mode, and i really don't want to open it while it is still plugged in, to prevent static electricity damaging the whole system, because i'm no expert there.

Also sometimes now the system releases beeps, like it did before on XP when it was turning off, during normal activity and yet nothing happens then.

as soon as you touch the bare metal of the case static isn't an issue because you have drained the static from your body, so no chance of zapping your system there to do it. Just look at justanoob's system, his case is a piece of cardboard under his motherboard :P

It really would be the easiest way to find out what is making the noise

Ok, sorry everyone, especially StrangleHold,

it appears to be really the CD/DVD drive that is making all that noise. It happens every time i boot the system from sleep mode. The drive name is Sony NEC Optiarc AD 7203S and it also won't open during the noise.

This never happend before in XP, so i'm guessing it is Win 7 that is giving the problem. And the beeping, that appeared in XP while it was turning off, is still present during normal activity now.
