Hi all, i have finally decided to upgrade to a newer computer and want to build one but my head is spinning from all of the info i have tried to sift through......... mobo's cpu's ram gpu's etc. From what i gather the quad core idea may be a bit too much for what i need, and it seems that for the price they are not real good yet? i think i have narrowed it down to either a core2 duo or an AMD Phenom2 x2 550 black for the cpu (i will mainly be using it for music, some home movie editing, net surfing, games, but something that i can be burning and listening to music at the same time, radio streaming, and generally quick to boot up and day to day operation)

Can anyone suggest components i would need for a budget of aprox aus$800. i have jumped the gun a little bit and have already bought a case
( 703 B intel AMD ATX pc case with dual 120mm + 22cm blue fan )
i would also like to have a system that i could upgrade to quad core etc down the track, any help would be greatly appreciated:confused:

Start with the motherboard. Choose either AMD or Intel.

Socket 775 minimum for Intel
Socket AM2+ minimum for AMD
Make sure they have the features you want, eg: gigabit LAN, RAID controller, number of slots etc.
Whatever you buy, make sure that the board has a PCI-Express 2.0 16x slot, otherwise you computer will be useless for games.
Get a decent PSU, i'm sure many people will help you with that.
