hi guys, i just graduated from high school and plan on working with fixing computers. my plan was to take college to prepare myself for the a+. but know someone has told me that i dont need to do college to get my a+ cert. i was wondering is this ok....and what comments or suggestions are.... i plan on working for myself opening my own little shop. thxs, shawn

I took my A+ at 18 and was in college at the time but not going to college for computers. Anyone can take it at any Prometric testing center. You just sign up and pay for it and you can take it as many times as you want. I think there may be a limit if you pass one test you must pass the other with in 90 days or something.

I am not sure as I got my A+ like a decade ago. The test is different than when I took it.

so i dont need to goto college..... and how would a employeer look at that i didint take college?......i have a bunch of expereince from hands on for bout 6 years...

It just depends. Really it depends on your interview skills and your experience when it comes to IT, in my opinion. I went to art school for animation and ended up working in IT. I am now an Unix/OS X administrator. Go figure eh?

Certifications don't necessarily equate to actual real world knowledge or job performance. However, they do kind of at least set a standard that your employers know that you are well versed in the basics to have an idea to figure most things out. You can't know everything and you can't always be right or fix things first try. However, knowing how to handle and trouble shoot problems is a skill gained through experience only. College can't teach you that, and there is never a definite answer either. There are always 1000s of different ways to accomplish the same task.

That is why whenever I come up on something that was set up and configured before I ever got involved I take the time to try to figure out why someone would set something up that way in the first place. There may be a really good reason as to why.

hmmm... a really important question i got is about the hands on part....i been working on computers since 2000 been building them for me and trying to fix software problems....... the question now is....i can goto college for hands on trnaing more.....but it cost so much and i might go in debt for a while to pay it off......

i found some books on it with labs that i can do at home with pictures......i was thinking maybe cancell college and study the book which would save money........i really havent studied into the book ....im open to suggestions...thxs, shawn

I got my A+ about a month ago. As long as you know a decent amount about computers and study A+ material for a little bit then you will pass. You have to take 2 tests. The first one is A+ Essentials and the minimum score is 675 out of 1000. The second test you have a choice of three tests. You have to score at least 700 out of 900 to pass.

I got my books to study about 4 weeks ago, I am going to be studying it over the next month or so then i am going to take it. I have took tests online and passed them, So i dont think i will have a problem takeing it. My teacher at school said that it can be tricky, as long as you review the book your in good hands...

My advice to you is take the exam, pass it then see if you can get a job... If you get a job save up for collage then go in a few years. But dont stop collage, Go to it... Just you dont have to go to it right away. I am takeing the exam, Getting a job, Then takeing online colleage corses at home. Its cheeper and easyer.

But anyway, Good Luck on the exam.

lol you definitely do NOT need to go to college to get A+ certified. going to college will help you get a job though.

I hope this isn't coming down to a decision between a piece of paper and college, is it?

I will promise you that any employer will jump at you quicker with a degree and an education than with a simple certification. Although, an A+ is definitely a plus on a resume.

College-actual knowledge, studying for several courses with different books, general knowledge increases.

A+ Cert-1 week's time studying through a $25 book from Barnes and Noble....

ok, thxs for everybodys replies.....i dcided on going to college and i also purschaed a book on a+ to help me along the way..thxs guy....
