Computer being stubborn lol

So my pc is being stubborn, it won`t shut down and gets stuck on the shutting down your computer screen, it`s takes a while to load, and then when i try to run AVG Disk defragmenter or other programs, sometimes they`ll load and stop responding, or they`ll not load at all.

I`m not sure wether this is a memore fault, hard drive fault or motherboard fault
As it was all running ok until a few days ago, it suddenly went off, and heard the PSU cable in the back make the like click noise, like i dunno it`s hard to discribe, lol:rolleyes:.
But now it is just as stubborn as me:rolleyes: abnd is really ping me off as, i`ve defrag using defraggler and that take agessssssssss to get to %10 i spent like 5hrs and it only got to %10 and then i used AVG, ran a full pc scan and only got Tracking cookies.
I`ve got college work i won`t to get done for next week, and can`t with this stubborn thing.

Anyhelp appreciated. It also says i`ve got 1.18mb ram when theres one 1gb and 1 256mb in there.

That everything still works suggests that it isn't a hardware issue but it's still possible something has gone bad. So all the problems started when you had this power problem a few days ago? You aren't having any more random power losses or blue screens or anything like that?

Usually I find slowness is caused by garbage software that gets installed over the course of a few years. It may be worth posting hijackthis logs in the security section to see if you have some unneeded software running.

You probably have onboard video which allocates some of your RAM for it's use.

Your power supply is likely going out. You should replace it ASAP. I would discontinue use of the computer until you can get a new PSU, as a failing power supply can wreak havoc on other parts of your computer, ultimately rendering it a paper-weight. I know from experience. Do NOT just "ride it out".

There are ways to test the PSU - you can Google them. But what you have described leads me to believe that it is, in fact, a failing power supply.

Tell us the make/model of all of your hardware and someone will be able to make a recommendation on what you should buy.

Cromewell - if the power supply is popping and the computer dies, it's certainly a hardware issue right? Or am I just tripping? I guess we would have had to hear the "click" to really know what happened, but I would certainly at least test the PSU before running that computer again. I really hate destroying hardware. :P

Thank you both for your replies.@ Cromewell
yup it started just after, (touch wood) i haven`t had anymore power shortages yet nor blue screens.

I booted in safe moe, and did system restore, and it is working pretty good, i mean microsoft office works, and disk defragmenter works, buti left it for an hour and it only did %10.But it all seems to be running quicker than what it did.

@ Deanj, does a certian program require more power than another? as i can`t see how it would be a power problem,
oh yer forgot to say it restarted, was pretty slow but it restarted:D

Not sure what this problem is.And why does DD only get to %10?

Thanks for any help.:good:

Yes if the power supply is making strange sounds that's very likely a problem.

@CarlC - have you tried running a throrough scan disk? Or used your HD manufacturers disk scanning software?

It ain`t making no noises,PC sounds the same as always.I didn`t get no HD company software.
I`m beginning to think it`s an HD fault,as i remember,my last HD died on me the same way the power went out this one.But i haven`t had this HD long.About just under maybe just over a yr.And i used defraggler, and did a quick defrag and it finished, yet when i tried to do a quick one yesturyday, before the SR it aborted itself. And i mean the slowness and programs not opening all leads to the hard drive.
