Hi my computer wont start up, I was using it and it froze so i shutted it down and turned it back on and it would turn on and do nothing just showed a black screen thats it and so i turned it off again and still nothing happen it just made a low humming noise and then the humming got louder and stuff how do i fix it? THanks!

I need some more info on the humming sound, but it might be a bad power supply... I've had a couple computers who's motherboard's have died too...though, they didn't hum, they just didn't come on.

Can you tell if it's an electrical hum or what?

I think the humming Came from the fan, at first it didnt make the hum untill i shutted it down like once or twice more times.

It COULD be a fan if say the fans were controled by the motherboard. If the motherboard died, it might just crank the fans up full blast. Is there any more info you could give us on the system?

sabedra, do you only get the splashscreen of the computer company, and then when it is supposed to show the windows splashscreen, it goes black? If so then you and I are having the exact same problem [my post "Experiencing Major PC Problem" details my issue]

Hmm well lets see, my computer froze than i turned it off and then i turned it back on it didnt start up so i turned it back off then i turned it on the fan loud then low then loud again so i turned it off then i turned it back on and it sounds normal now but still nothing starts up and it doesnt show nothing at all, If the motherboard dead how much money would it cost 2 fix it? Thanks

Any beeps? Replacement motherboard prices range from ~$70 and up, depending on what you are replacing. If it's too old, now might be the time to consider an entirely new system.

No beeps Its a 1ghz 256mb ram computer should i get a new one or fix it?

Well, I'd check to see if the powersupply fan is working. It's in the back of the computer towards the top. If it's spinning poorly, or has a burning smell coming off it, I'd try a powersupply, new cheapies are $16 and up, I got a used 250w for $3.00 from a local PCrecycle store. Check to see if there is an led lit up on the motherboard, most have some red led that indicates power and Make sure the cpu fan is spinning nicely at turn on. Led might be mentioned in the motherboard manual. If you have it, and it's not lit up, powersupply or motherboard, if you need a motherboard, I'd upgrade. If cost is an issue, try finding a pcrecycle, they shouldn't be too expensive and the store here has a 30 return even on the used stuff. If all that's ok, I'd get a video card from a pcrecycle cheaply and hope that works, then try a different sdram stick. Good Luck.. If any of you local stores have a computersource magazine, they might have used shops in there.

Use your ear: what is humming? :)

I think the humming Came from the fan, at first it didnt make the hum untill i shutted it down like once or twice more times.
If thats the case, try cleaning it: otherwise replace it

Depends on the amount of money you have to play with: I would try to replace it but obviously money constraints will effect this decision greatly
