Computer buildup problems

I just built up a computer to be a file server but am having problems with it.

Problem: I start the computer, its all dandy, goes to ask me to boot from CD.... then TURNS OFF for no apparent reason.

Specs:
3.4ghz P4 cpu w/ hyperthreading
512mb of ram
128mb video card
DVD-RW drive
200gb HDD

Anyone know why this is happening? Since it is right when it's reading the CD drive, I tried using a different one, but no luck. I think I will try a different HDD, but doubt it will work.

P.S. YES, I did check all the cables.
 
Just tried a different HDD (already had an OS on it from different system) and it asked me to boot from CD... I didn't press any key so it went to say: NTDLR missing. Turned off right after that.

Could it possibly be the power supply? I have a 350w and I thought that would be enough to power it.
 
looks like you need to change your boot priorities in your bios.... if that doesn't work you need to reinstall windows
 
I already had changed my boot sequence.
The problem is that Im trying to install Windows on a new drive, since this is a brand new computer build.

Edit: I'm getting it to goto the blue screen for the windows 2k install, but then it turns off.
 
I had a simular issue like that once, where I was trying to install windows and it would restart the comp everytime I tryed to boot from the CD. I ended up having bad RAM of all things, once I replaced that it worked fine. So you may start by testing that for grins :) unless you already tested it.

When I do the test on startup, it gets to the end then restarts... :(

Think it's bad? :confused: I just bought it today. :rolleyes:

You boot this test from a floppy. It tests in a continuous loop until you stop it, it may take awhile depending on your system. You'll know things are wrong if it shows in red "string 00**** blah blah" (not sure what the correct term is right now, but i'm sure it's not blah blah :D ) I'm pretty sure thats what it'll do, but its been awhile since i've used it.

Like I said, this helped me with my situation, but mine just kept restarting. If yours is shutting down after it says booting from CD then it may be a different problem. I would try testing anyway just to even know your mem is good. I always test mine when I get new RAM ever since I had that prob.

Well, just looked at CPU temps and it's 92*C/199*F. That could be the problem. :(
I guess the $15 heat sync/fan doesn't cut it. :(

Any suggestions on what to get?
 
Any generic, more expensive fan that's more than 3000 or around 3500 rpm would be the best. Also, I had the same problem with a computer that I just built my friend. It would do the same thing, only not shut off. I just cleared the CMOS and started over again, and it worked just fine.
 
My CPU fan is rated for 3400 rpm.
Could the processor be bad since its giving off so much heat even though Im still only in the BIOS?
 
Yeah, diffenently get a better cooler, one with a copper heatsink is good. And all that Pengiun guy said! ;) Your CPU prolly isn't bad, but will be soon if you run it that hot. :)

That's probably a read error. At 92C you could almost boil water. And yes, you'd better invest a good $50 or so on a new HSF.
 
Thermaltake Polo735 is a decent cooler for the price ... of course you can always get a Thermalright HS + Panaflo fan :)
