hello everybody,

im at my friend's house and he has a cd drive as well as a cd burner and a external cd/dvd drive
all three drives are visible in 'my computer'

the problem is that none of the drives can ready any kind of cd/dvd anymore (audio, data, software cd, movie dvd, ...)

does anyone know anything about that? maybe what could be damaged would help already

thanks

val

I've seen a similar problem with windows where it wouldn't refreash the drives correctly... My suggestion would be try a bootable disk and see if you can boot to it. That'll at least let us know if it's hardware or software related.

we did that

no response to a bootable cd ... we used the xp cd so i am not totally sure whether it is alright (no other computer in the house) but it worked the last time he installed windows ....

could it maybe be the bios?

thx, val

Bios for not booting, yes. However, if you see them in windows, they SHOULD be correct in the bios. Double check the boot order and be sure the CD-ROMs are before the hard drive.

If all three won't read, it unlikely (though not impossible) to be drive failures.

I would go into Device Manager, first look at the properties of the drives to see if there is an obvious problem. Then check the IDE controllers, Advanced Setting and see what the Current Transfer Mode is. If you have dma enabled, you may get a rate of udma mode 2 or 4. You did not specify what the OS and drives are so it could be something different.

I would disconnect the external drive temporarily in case that is causing a problem. If you are using XP the drive will be detected when you reconnect and drivers reloaded.
