Hey, Everytime i go to shutdown my computer the shutdown icon says turnoff and install important updates. it use to do it on occasion but now it does it everysingle time i shutdown, even if i have been on for no more than 5 minutes. should it be updating this often? should i stop it from updating? and should i be concered?

It sounds like a partition installation of an update happened there. One thing to do is to disable the auto update setting in the security center found in the control panel and then go to the MS update link for the auto detection where you choose express or custom at http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us

Once your system has been detected and all updates are downloaded and installed you will see the prompt to finish the installation then. The restart of the system there should see the message removed. All updates will have been installed there. Remember to disable the automatic update setting first however.

Leave your computer on all night and set them to do automatic updates at 3:00 AM

OR

Go into the control panel, select automatic updates and select "Notify me, but do not download or install them". Then you can do it at your convenience.

Once all of the updates are on and installed the constant prompting should disappear. The auto update or prompt when available option is likely to see a repeat there. To prevent a repeat of that simply pay a visit to the update link periodically. I ran into this problem a few where that solved that fast.

Don't worry about him. Your question was to stop the downloads. They can be stopped by disabling them in the Control Panel, or going into the Security Settings and disabling Automatic Updates altogether.

Don't worry, by the time he catches on this thread will be on page 3.

Where did you say you were? Lost as usual I can only imagine. :P
