Computer "Crash"

Hey,

Some time my computer just "crashes". Well.. let me explain.

All the open windows I have stop responding and if I try and open something nothing happens and if I try to type something in run it says "Windows cannot find this file, please make sure the file exist" (Not the normal run cannot find the file error). I press ctrl+alt+del and click task manager.. nothing happens. I right click on the taskbar and select task manager.. nothing happens and explorer crashes.

The only way to solve it is by holding down the power button until it switches off (No, it wont even shutdown by its self!).

Please help!

Thanks,

Tom

It could be a failing hard drive, or it could be just some software problem. Both can result in similar issues. Have you run some cleaning software like Hijackthis, spyware scanners, etc etc?

I have NOD32, Zone Alarm Pro and Webroot Spy Sweeper.

This problem happened again while installing the latest version of DivX.

It sounds like it might be a virus. Startup regedit (Start->run->regedit) if you can't start it, rename regedit.exe regedit.com

In regedit find the key group: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open\command
It should have 1 key that is a REG_SZ, make sure it's value is "%1" %*

I can open files most of the time, it only happens when this "crash" occurs. Also the key is set at the value you said it should be.
