I have a compaq SR1820NX. It came with a 160GB IDE Ultra ATA hard drive which has now crashed on me. Currently im typing on my desktop keyboard and viewing my desktop monitor while moving mouse on my laptop pad since i cant use my desktop and this is the only way i can get on line to ask u guys this. I want to buy a new hard drive but i dont know which type to get. There is 100 and 133. Im baffled. thank you in advance for your help because I've always received an answer on here when my computer troubles me.

You'll want one with a fast rpm so that it can read the data off it quick, You'll also want a fairly big cache so it can help read and write a lot faster.

If you don't want another IDE drive, you could get a SATA one, they're faster and the cables are thin instead of the huge ribbon ones.

yes i was going for 16mb cache and 7200 rpm but i didnt think i cud use SATA on my PC. could i use SATA on Compaq SR1820NX ?? (i added 1gb of RAM to this PC also..which i dont think has anything to do with hard drives)

thanks for response

I don't know if you could use SATA, if your computer is fairly new then the MOBO may have a SATA connector on it, do you know the name of your MOBO?

16mb Cache is good and that seems to be the standard rpm.

thanks NJNETSFAN, as it happens i googled my motherboard and i got the same link and found that out also but thanks for ur help. So now im in the clear to use SATA hard drives?
