Computer crashing

My computer has developed an incredibly annoying habit of shutting down whenever I play a game on it. My laptop more than meets the requirements for all the games I'm trying to play (Portal 2, Civ V, and Worms Ultimate Mayhem). I know that my video card is the weak link in my machine but even that meets at least the minimum requirements for all three games. The weird thing is that it is like it just shuts down. When I start it back up it acts like it was shut down properly, not like it does when it shuts down by holding down the power button.

Any idea why this keeps happening and what I can do about it?

Most likely its overheating. When it overheats it will just shut down abruptly. unless its designated as a gaming laptop, then it doesn't have the proper cooling for it.

It has been getting really hot. Anything I can do about that? Getting a new laptop is out of the question since I already spent almost $2000 on this one a year ago.

Did you get it customized or did you buy it off the shelf? Whats the make and model of laptop? Is it dusty where you live? If so, you should take a can of compressed air and blow air in the cooling slots to blow the dust out. The only other thing you can do is use a fan near you to keep it cooler.

It is a Lenovo T410 that I customized to run programs like SolidWorks and other engineering programs. They need a good machine to run but they don't need a good video card so I cut a corner there (damn college student budget) and now I'm regretting it.

I believe the thinkpad is more of a business laptop than anything. Most likely as I said, it doesn't have the proper cooling. Not much you can really do unless you have a hardware issue. What are the temps when you aren't gaming?

I have no idea. It typically runs cool enough that it just feels slightly warm to the touch. It gets hot enough that you don't want to touch the bottom when gaming. It ran fine the last time I played games on it (The Witcher). I'll try setting it up on something so it has air space beneath it.

I don't know why I didn't think about the heat before but now that you mention it, it is pretty damn clear what the issue is.

You need to set it on a flat surface as it has feet that will keep it up so hot air can escape from it. Having it on a bed or your lap isn't a good thing. You might also want to try a cooling pad for it.
