Computer crashing

Hello everyone. Every time I start my computer up it gets to the desktop and freezes after no more than 5 minutes, usually less than 5 minutes. Sometimes when I start it up it doesnt even start, i mean the computer is on but i can't see anything on the lcd. And one time it just went to a blue screen which said "IRQL_EQUAL_OR_LESS". I have not installed any new hardware recently. It just keeps on freezing which doesn't allow me to use my computer very much. Does anyopne have any idea of how to fix this? It would be very much appreciated.

Thank You

It has:
3.4GHZ w/HT (478)
nVidia GeForceFX5500
maxtor serial ata 250GB HD
2 X 512MB DDR RAM (Corsair PC3200)
X-INFINITY case
emprex CD writer/DVD writer
ECS P-848 motherboard

external:
has monitor and printer attatched to it

Have you installed any new software? Have you run antivirus or antispyware recently? Do you have a firewall? It sure sounds like it could be a virus or a problem with your OS

Actually, on second thought, it is probably the RAM if you are getting that bsod. Try some different RAM, or if you have 2+ sticks, try each one individually. Also run Memtest86 (from DOS, make a startup disk)

Ok there are three general culprits:
  • Jump into the BIOS and look for an option that says "Hardware monitor" or something like that, what you're looking for is to see that:
    1. the CPU temp <=60
    2. The value for vcore (or core/cpu etc) is 1.25-1.40 (prescott) or 1.475-1.525 (northwoodC)
    3. That the voltages for the +3.3, +5 and +12 are stable (i.e., within 5% of spec as well as not fluctuating like crazy)
This lets you eliminate (to a degree) the power supply being the problem
  • Run Memtest86+ for say 2-3 hours to see if the problem is memory based
  • The last culprit is plain old "windows messed up"

i haven't installed any new hardware or software recently. I have microsoft antispyware and have run it but it doesnt help.....and when i try with only one stick of RAM it tends to freeze even quicker.

Also, disable the "quick POST" in BIOS to run a preliminary memory test on bootup

Then run memtest for a couble of hours, it would appear that the RAM is the problem.
Already covered :)

thank you and i will try memtest if it happens again. I actually just ran microsoft antispyware and it found 1 worm. So i just removed it and it hasn't frozen yet. Thank you for all of your advice. It is greatly appreciated.

i kno im kinda late on my response to this thread but my friend has had the same problem for a while now and has been gettin the dreaded blue screen. i helped him fix it by rearranging the formation of the hard drive and the plugs within the tower. sometimes if the plugs are undone or loose, then this can occur. idk if it's the same in your case but i'm just saying.

all im sayin is that u should take a look at ur internal structure if it happens again...

Reload

sounds to me like you got a virus and you should format the HD and reload the OS to get rid of your problem. If you still have problems after reload then i would take a look at your BIOS to see if its up to date. good luck.

Power supply or RAM are probably your most likely culprits. I had a very similar problem, and it turned out that the 3.3V voltage rail was flaky. When I unplugged the power connection from the motherboard, two pins on the end were clearly burnt.

can u walk me through that b/c i think i wanna do that... just as an experimental thing.
